Tips for writing the very best email ads that actually sell (think: 5-second rule)

Think of your email headline as a stop-watch with a 5-second timer.  Because five (5) seconds is about all that you have to reach out and get somebody's attention as he or she scans through email-after-email for eye-catching headlines.  Notice that the watch in the photo to the left is set to ten seconds.  That's to remind you that you only have HALF that much time!  By the way, you're also limited to fifty(50) characters. That’s all the space that you have available for creating a credible, tantalizing, valuable, appealing, relevant, descriptive and/or interesting headline that will result in a high open rate. Doesn’t sound like too much to ask… I mean, 50 characters is plenty of room. Granted, it’s 15 less than you’re allowed to see for titles on Google’s SERPs, but still, it shouldn’t be that hard. Right?

High Conversion, Low Open Rates and Clickable Email Ad Headlines

Did you know it’s possible to have a high conversion rate (how many people click on the links within the email and buy, sign up, etc.) and a low open rate (how many people click on the headline to read the email)? It’s true! No matter how poor the headline is, you can probably get at least a 3% open rate, and those 3% may have a 80 – 90% conversion rate.

Diagnosis: The inside of your email is a lot better – more persuasive – than the outside.

There’s a lot of pressure on those poor little 50 character headlines. It’s not even 50 characters, really, because you have to count the spaces. So what can you do to beef up your email subject line and get better open rates? Here are a few tips:

1. Tell the reader what to expect - It’s not nice to tease. When readers click on a headline, they expect to read in the email what the headline promises. Think about the last headlines you read and why they grabbed your attention. Most of the time, I’ll be the headline sums up an important fact or promises something.

Example: Electronic Arts Acquires Playfish for $400 Million

Now, when you click on that link, you’ll not be surprised to find out that, my goodness, Electronic Arts spent a ton of money to buy Playfish.

2. Don’t be misleading - Sure, you want a kick-butt, grab you by the ears, interesting headline. However, don’t work so hard for it that you step over the fine line from “interest” to “misleading”. Being misleading is a good way to lose would-be loyal autoresponder subscribers. In fact, studies have shown that straightforward subject lines tend to show higher open rates than creative, “interesting” ones.

3. Don’t recycle - Sure, going green and recycling is a wonderful thing… but not with emails. Don’t reuse your subject line; each one has the same five seconds to interest, impress or entertain. Each one has to stand out from the rest.

4. Make sure you don’t repeat yourself - You have a “from” line and a “subject” line. If your “From” line has your newsletter or company name, don’t include it in the subject line. The good thing about this is it clears up some of those 50 characters for better headlines.

5. DON’T YELL - You make think using ALL CAPS is an excellent way to gain attention. However, this is like a flashing neon sign that says “spam” to filters and people alike. Use proper capitalization.

6. Make sure your subject line isn’t cut o… - Most email marketing companies allow you to send yourself a test email. Use this feature! You don’t want to assume all of the subject line will be seen just because it’s under 50 characters.

How to get more traffic to your blog

Web traffic is (and will always be) one of the two hottest topics in Internet marketing - the other one being list-building.  With enough traffic and/or a big enough list, you can pretty much write your own ticket.  Of course, for list-building and email marketing, you need an autoresponder and capture forms all over the place... such as your blog or website.  But putting optin forms on your sites is pointless if nobody sees them.

You can have a killer website that solves all the world’s problems, but if you don’t have the traffic, I would venture to say that your website means NOTHING.  Why?  Because you're winking in the dark and nobody knows it's there!  OK, I know that's a bit harsh, but lets face facts.  If the people you are targeting aren’t getting to your website, your website might as well not exist.  That makes sense, right?  So how do you get the right type of people (and plenty of them!) to your site?  There are many ways to do this, and there isn’t a shortage of people that would venture to give you advice. If you do a search in Google for “how to get traffic to your website”, you will come up with over 93 Million search results.

What I’m going to do in this post is share with you one of the strategies I’ve used that actually works – Getting Back-links. I’ll do this by looking at a specific example of how I’ve applied the concept of getting back-links to my blogger.com sites.  Lets look at my back-linking strategy in some detail.  Are you ready?

Back-links can be a very important part of the traffic generation process for two main reasons:

1) Making Google happy. We all know Google and, whether we like it or not (I kind of like it), they are the boss when it comes to indexing & cataloguing content across the Internet. Where that is concerned, we all have to bow down to the Google gods.  Be mindful at all times of what Google actually is.  It's a service for people who want to search the Internet in order to satisfy a need, or merely their curiosity.  It's a machine and nothing more.  Search engines are mind-bogglingly complex computer algorithms that do the same thing all the time, every time.  So it's critically important to understand how they 'think'.  One of the metrics that is important to Google is the amount, quality and relevance of back-links you have directed to your site. If you can get many important sites to link to you, it’s as if those sites are telling Google – “I think this is a site you should check out, and value”. This can result in higher rankings in Google, and lots of natural search traffic.  This is HUGE.

2)  Direct Traffic. The more sites you get linking to your site, the more sources you have of direct traffic (people clicking the link to visit your site). If you can get a popular site to recommend your product, one of the results of that can be high-quality targeted traffic. If your content is highly relevant to those visitors, you can grow your subscriber base significantly, in a relatively short period of time with the autoresponder optin form on your site.

When I started my blogger.com sites, my plan was to provide a bunch of short posts explaining various topics involving email marketing, list-building and autoresponders so that newcomers to this industry could have a helpful resource written by someone who actually uses these things and has been using them successfully.  Once I decided on a specific target audience, I started looking around the web for others who are saying the same things that I'm saying on their websites.  As a part of my research, I asked the following questions:

1)  Who are my top competitors? I did this by entering keywords that were very relevant to my target audience. Phrases like “List-Building basics”, “Writing effective email sales letters”, “Monetizing your list” and a few others.  After that, it's simply a matter of examining the sites that come up on the first page of Google after searching with those phrases.

2) Who links to my top competitors? This is almost like putting on a spy outfit and running through the Internet spying on your competitors (I know, I’m so sneaky).  Once I had some basic information in that regard, I began my back-link quest. I went to each one of the sites and tried to determine if those sites were potential sources of high quality backlinks for my site. I looked at details such as:

* Whether my content is relevant to the site
* Whether the site had been updated recently
* If there was an obvious point of contact listed, such as an email address or contact form

When all was said and done, I had placed all of these details from approximately 100 sites into a spreadsheet, so that I could access them all from one location. This activity took me a few hours on a Sunday, but ended up being very valuable.  Once I had all of my data put together in a spreadsheet, I initiated contact with the owners (or webmasters) of the sites. I did this by either shooting them an email or using the contact form on their site. I typed up a generic email that I modified to suit the person I was emailing.

The email went something like this:
Hi [INSERT NAME],
I’ve just recently visited your site at [INSERT URL] and noticed that you have a page with resources for email marketers. I’m currently developing a site that I think would be a benefit to your website visitors. It’s a blogger.com website for email marketing newbies and the URL is [INSERT URL].
I built this site primarily as a resource for my affiliate referrals. It has a growing body of hints and tips based upon my industry experience to date.  If you are interested in linking to the site, I would appreciate it, and so would my readers.  No doubt, they can benefit from your content as well, and I am happy to place a reciprocal link on my blog.
If you have ANY questions, or if you need anything in terms of resources that I can help with, don’t hesitate to let me know! All the Best!

Using that process, I emailed approximately 20 site owners. Why only that many? I never really got around to finishing the project and will be outsourcing it in the near future.  Once those emails were sent out, I played the waiting game. Out of the 20 emails, I heard back from 4 of those sites. They liked what I was doing and decided to link to my site from a page on their website. This made me very excited.

There was one site in particular that was a VERY high traffic site that also belonged to a Internet Marketing guru. She had the site for a long time (over ten years) and also targeted newbies. She replied to me letting me know that she wrote a blog post about my site. In other words, this traffic was HIGHLY targeted traffic.

The results from my initial contact with those sites were interesting. The other two sites that linked to me sent me a handful of traffic, and that was definitely appreciated. However, that one site that linked to me sent me more visits than all of the others. To be more specific, it sent me 517 visits from that one blog post in the first month! However, that traffic soon died off as the blog post moved from the first page to being hidden in the archive.

Once I had gotten some more content on my site, I decided to follow up with that site owner to update her on my progress with the site and to make a specific suggestion to her in terms of linking back in a different way (one that would result in more traffic). This was a significantly longer email, so I won’t share it here, but the gist of the email was this:  I had made lots of improvements (and I provided specific examples). I appreciate her referring her audience to me and was getting great feedback from those visitors. If she needed any help with her site, I would be happy to assist. I then asked her if she would consider placing a link back to my site in her sidebar.  The reason behind me asking her for a sidebar link was simple – by doing so, there would be a backlink on every page of her blog and that could result in a steady stream of traffic. She quickly responded that she was happy to do so, and by the time I received the email back from her that went like this:
I will absolutely add you as a link. You are right about finding free and quality content for education and your posts are great. I like the changes you’ve done to your site too, I don’t have a lot of time tonight to look at some of your newest posts, but I did add you to the “education sites” links.
That was exactly what I was looking for, and it was exactly what I received. Happy me!

As you can see, I put together a list of one hundred sites, contacted 20ish, heard back from four and followed up with one. That one site I followed up with was the most beneficial. It resulted in a significant amount of direct traffic, and also resulted in a number of other sites linking back to me.  Ever since I received that backlink , my traffic has increased every month. In the last month, the site has received 11,598 pageviews from 4,019 unique visitors according to Google Analytics, and I can track a significant amount of that traffic as being a result of that backlink.

Another great part of this process is that it all happened naturally. I didn’t go out there and buy some back-link software that automatically generated tons of spammy back-links. I never worry about being penalized by Google for using shady 'black hat' techniques for generating back-links. Google is starting to give me more authority. I can tell because they are sending me an increasing amount of traffic daily. My traffic is looking good, and I’m happy.

My back-linking experiment went very well and this technique has proven to be a very valuable one. Now that I’ve gone through the strategy I’ve used for getting backlinks, let me share a few tips with you that can increase your success:

1) Choose sites that are very relevant to your niche. Getting back-links is always a good thing, but the ones that will have the biggest effect will be those with a target audience that is similar to your blog. That is how you will get your highest conversions.

2) Seek to contribute value, not just get traffic. Traffic is a valuable resource, and most site owners (who are worth connecting with) value their traffic highly. It is obvious when someone is just trying to get traffic. I get numerous requests for links from my sites and I ignore almost all of them. However, there are a few that have stood out to me because I could really tell that they were trying to contribute value. Seek to do the same and people will notice.

3) Don’t be spammy. This is probably a very obvious one, but I still wanted to mention it. Don’t just send out a bunch of spammy emails asking for links. There is so much spam out there that people are becoming immune to it. Show them that you are a real person who really wants to contribute value.

4) Think big. I can imagine that there are many people out there who would go through this process and be afraid to send emails to the “Big Dawgs” in their industry. I would encourage you to think big and seek to contribute value even with those guys. You never know – they might just say yes, and the worse they could do is say no.

5)  Don’t ignore the smaller sites. No, they might not result in a ton of traffic immediately (or possibly ever). However, every single link counts! You never know, a site that is smaller today could end up being huge in the future and send you a ton of traffic.

I’m not a back-linking guru, or anything of that sort. I did what I did because it just seemed to make sense, based on what I know about Internet marketing. I’m sure there are many other great techniques out there and I would like to hear what has worked for you. How do you create a blog?

The fact that this blog exists is proof that they are easy to create. Believe me, I am not that 'tech savvy'. But my lack of technical skills and programing knowledge are not an obstacle to this blog's success. Blogger.com makes is so easy, that lack of technical know-how is no excuse for not being successful with your blog. After reading this, I'm sure that you will agree.

How little most people know about web-page design often surprises me. That's because so many folks use text messaging and other complex phone apps routinely, along with many other latest & greatest hi-tech gadgets. I certainly do! But if you aren't used to doing it, creating web pages (or a simple blog like this one) can be a daunting task. Of course, the easiest way to get an attractive and functional website up and running is to outsource it. For about $500.00, any number of professionals in your area (or around the world) can get you set up up with a fine site - and have it tailored for search engine optimization. But you can also do it yourself (on the cheap, as in FREE) with blogger.com, just like I've done it here! You certainly don't need technical expertise.

You can do just about anything with a blog like this one, from adding slide shows, to Power Point presentations, to audio & video (which visitors love) and a subscription form for your TrafficWave autoresponder! Not only that, but once you start generating enough web traffic to it, Google will begin providing visitation stats that will tell you how many visitors you are receiving a day and how they found your site.

Later, when you finally do create that flashy website, you can also put a link in there to your good old blog... the place where it all began!

Are you lost?

This blog post is specifically for all of the beginners out there who are discovering the Internet Marketing world for the first time. It's exciting, confusing and OVERWHELMING, isn't it? I was once a “lost” beginner too, so I know exactly how you feel! And just like you, I was (and still am) amazed by the great names in this still-new industry. There are a lot of great teachers out there who's success speaks for itself. Just be aware that there are also many industry 'gurus' who aren't actually the real thing. They've got great websites, videos and even live seminars. But just like the late-night real estate infomercials you see on TV, they're really just selling re-hashed ebooks and courses that aren't anything new. It's not that it's 'bad' information, it's just that sometimes you will get suckered into paying lots of money for the same stuff from lots of different people.

So whether you've already heard this or not, here is some Free advice that is essential knowledge for anyone just starting out. I merely want to highlight some important realities about this business, and my intention is to provide the facts for people who are still unsure whether or not they are going to jump on this bandwagon or not. And by the way, if you have working at online business for awhile, you might get some nuggets here too.... or at least confirm what you've been learning:

1.) Be patient and pay your dues.

Unless you have between $20,000 to $50,000 to invest with an expert team who will set up (and maintain) your business for you, it will take plenty of time to learn how to operate online. It's an enormous amount of information to digest. That means that you 'get it' in little bits at a time, here and there. You might as well know right now that there isn't any quick and easy path to setting up a profitable online business. NOBODY does it overnight.

2.) Learn everything you can about email marketing.

I am assuming that you are here because you've heard of TrafficWave, autoresponders and/or email marketing. That's important, because list-building (i.e. building your email contact list) will be the most important thing that you will ever do. List-building also involves relationship-building, branding and establishing credibility as well. It's no secret. If you have a large and responsive email list, you can pretty much write your own ticket. That's an entirely different subject!

3.) Never, never quit!
